Got The Callaway Mini Driver. Its in the bag to stay. Goodbye three wood.

These are a good price these days. Larger sound from the tm leads me to believe that energy is wasted at contact. The Callaway's all have such hot faces on them. Great club for people who love 3 woods and are rubbish with the driver. Like Phil Mickelson! I smack these(the Callaways) 280 straight down the fairway, but cannot do the same with driver. The risk is 10-20 yards at best for huge loss in accuracy to go with driver. For us average golfers trying to shoot par/bogie golf, strike the ball well and keep the ball in play and all the rest is putting, chipping, and knowing your distances.

Do you think the Taylormade Aeroburner series is still good to use
Mart Green
Mart Green - 5 years ago
thanks for the review - sounded like a good idea for my game, giving me an alternative when my driver was being naughty! took the plunge and got the aero burner, took it out yesterday and it was very good! struggled to hit 3woods off the tee for years I think everybody needs a safe shot off the tee and I can see this doing the job for me - the deep face makes such a difference off the tee in the winter it goes the same distance within 10 yards of my driver, we will see what summer brings thanks for the video, it helped in the process of buying. ta

A quick question Mark. you have done a lot of club reviews, how far has tech actually evolved?? for a comparison could you hit the taylormade aero burner tp 3 wood you gamed for a bit against their old marquee 3 wood the original rbz??

Great review Mark , thank you for doing this .. I think the mini drivers are here to stay ...

My interest comes from the fact that I can hit my 3 wood 220 yards with startling accuracy, but my driver only 240, with only good accuracy... Would one of these minis not bridge that gap?... I'm looking at one as a driver replacement... Thanks
Mark Rice
Mark Rice - 5 years ago
+Mark Crossfield .... I was in a simulator today and noted that I was swinging the mini at around 95 mph, which is 7 to 10 mph faster than my driver.... I feel like I can accelerate this club faster than a driver, and speculate that it's because of the smaller head size... Does this seem plausible?
Mark Rice
Mark Rice - 5 years ago
Ha ha ha!... Similar to my own thoughts, but it leaves me with the conundrum of believing there is some distance to be found somewhere.. My driver feels slow when I swing it because of it's mass... I wonder if a smaller headed driver like the mini would give me more club head speed, and therefore more distance, as my 3 wood seems to.
Mark Crossfield
Mark Crossfield - 5 years ago
Not sure there is a gap that needs bridging there.

Mark, I like and " LIKE " you videos and they are of great help to me I can not see me commenting often since I hardly see you respond in the comments.  May I suggest you monitor the comments section of the 2 or 3 most current videos and engage with your subscribers more. People will respond very well to it. Just starting to play at 50 years old here. Your videos are very valuable to me and my learning curve.

A friend of mine who is a semi pro (HDC 2.5) has the TaylorMade burner...he let me try it (first time in my life on a driving range)...the first "shot" I skyed it and shot our own roof...we were lucky noone was hurt :'D
Half an hour later I hit a 200 meter shot :) (170m carrie)
Now I'm addicted...I ordered a Dunlop beginner set and some wooden tees and also 100 second hand balls on ebay...
Thats cool to beginn with, isn't it?

PS: I have to say that my friend told me a "putter god" when I took the Putter also the first time and laied all 15 putts max 1 meter away from the holes (with a 15 to 20 meter distance and double and tripple breaks)
It appears that I won a putting challenge against him (who comes closer to the hole in three putts...i won. Now he's i dept with 5 green fees :D)

I have the SLDR mini driver hit it about 235 240 from the tee 215 220 from the fairway love the club although did try out the Callaway mini Crossfield was spot on any little bit of a miss hit you lose about 2 to 7 yards. My opinion go with the Taylor made

Calloway dispersion stats 9+25+9 = 53  (= average 17 yards offline)
thats way too much for me. the landing area would have to be 40 yards wide to hit the fairway. NO not buying that.

As I struggled with my driver I tried out both these and was not charmed but then the pro picked out the Ping Rapture FW and I was wowed :) it says 13 degrees loft but I had lower launch and lower spin and was hitting it 30 yards longer. Almost the same as with my Titleis 913 9 degrees. I Love it!! You should do a review of it and compare to the other minis :D cheers!

Glad you did another mini driver video but I am still unsure the (aero) mini is for me. I still like my driver performance.

Next one I'm trying for 3wood replacement (maybe 5wood too) is the Cobra Fly Z.

Hi Mark,

very nice with the Pro-Tracer and the clubheadspeed comperison. You´re reviews getting even better. These clubs remind me when i started to play golf. I started with the Burner Bubble Driver. A comperison to modern heads would be nice.

I don't really understand where these clubs sit. Like you said, if someone were going to drop their driver, then maybe they'd go in the bag but the only reason someone might drop their driver that I can think of is that they struggle to control it. Wouldn't they then struggle to control a long shaft with an even smaller head?

In other news, I've just bought the Aero Burner 3 wood, and love it. The flight helps me no end!!

I still have a Callaway X2Hot 2 Deep Mini Driver. I never liked the bigger heads of driver, never gave me any confidence. For me, the bigger head shows more opportunities for a mishit, but that's just me. With my mini, I can crank it down a fairway and keep up with people using driver.
craglyboy
craglyboy - 5 years ago
the difference in loft could be down to tolerances in the lofts. Just because your driver says 9.5 degrees doesnt mean that's what it is sadly, some drivers can be out by as much as 4 degrees as I learnt recently. Had a G30 ordered at 10 degrees was going way too high my pro measured it and it had 14 degrees of loft!!!!

Very interesting stuff, I can't keep a driver on target to save my life, but I'm way more consistent with a 3 Wood and game a 3W as my primary tee club.  Have been looking to pick one of these up for a while now... too bad all these a are stupid expensive.

+Wizartar Ahh bummer, I forgot a lot of cornfield's fan base is in the UK, I'm in the states. Good luck, I'm sure the TM SLDR ones will be very cheap soon, even if you need to pick one up used. I tried the aeroburner mini driver at the shop and it was not as forgiving in my opinion.

+Wizartar picked up one of the TMs off ebay 14 degree, 60% of retail. I play it like a 3 wood and had couple of excellent rounds with it. the shaft is "only" 43.5. Would recommend

I've looked at rockbottomgolf but the Internationale shipping puts me back to the price range of getting it locally.  I'm going to sit it out and see if there's any good local discounts over the off season when the weather turns gray and rainy.

You can get an SLDR mini driver under $100 at sites like rockbottomgolf.com , hurricanegolf.com . I have an SLDR mini driver and hit a fairway every tee shot unless I completely barf the shot and it goes 30 yards. I improved every aspect of my game but completely lost my ability to hit a full size driver, it is very strange. I ended up just getting the mini driver and haven't looked back since, give it a shot!

I have the old SLDR Mini Driver at 12 degrees and love it .

It can sit right behind my driver and is so so easy to hit , the shorter shaft really helped me.

Mark, I tried Aero Mini when they 1st came out to help with length and accuracy on narrow driving holes. Settled on the 14 degree. Can't hit it well off turf, which is to be expected, but added an Aero 5 wood at 18 degrees that goes a country mile off turf and tee. I did try Callaway Mini 1.5, but scared most of the worms living on the range. Have to admit, bought a 915 Driver recently, which is a gem, but narrow and short is  (220) is all Mini range, and I'm not a long hitter. It does surprise. I know it takes another place in the bag, but it fits my confidence expectations at this time. Now looking at the new i irons, so knock off the great reviews/comparisons! You're costing me money, and I'd like to retire one day! ;>)

This proves that they have run out of things to do.  They have hit the wall.  TOO many clubs out these days.  Its a joke.  I still have my mizuno mp14s from 1994.  The mizuno MX500 driver from 2006..odyssey rossie 2 putter and Faldo wedges.  They're still awesome.  You CANT buy a better game people...you CANT do it.

+peartfaldo I agree. I occasionally try new clubs but they tend to be no better if not worse than what I use, the newer drivers are a classic example they are too long too and far too light weight.

Why do companies make these clubs...I have yet top play a round of golf with anyone who has a mini anything in the bag...are these clubs just suped up woods that can be sold at a similar price as a driver?

I absolutely love my Callaway 12deg mini-driver and had no hesitation at all in it replacing my 11.5deg Nike Covert driver with it as its long and i can hit it off a low tee or the deck. I didn't mind losing the 10-15 yards even though that shortened my overall game. However, everything  turned upside down at target golf this week. I picked up a ladies driver that was standing idle and enjoyed hitting a driver again. Also I was thrashing my MP-H5 driving 1 iron way past the 180 yards where my 3 wood sits. So, bag shuffle time, time to go longer. I effectively replaced my 3 wood with the driving iron and the mini-driver, now i had a free slot for my Covert driver. No point putting it back unchanged it clashes with the Callaway so, I cranked it up to 10.5deg. OMG can the world cope with Vici reaching 250 yards; we will just have to see if i can hit real balls that strong, all the indications with range balls is that i have no trouble hitting it at all and I have bought pink castle driving tees :-)

I think the Callaway being adjustable is worth something too. It isn't like a regular driver where you get fitted and keep the loft, with this club potentially having more versatility being able to adjust the loft when you want could come in handy.

If you know you're playing a wide open course with long par 5s you can loft it up and use it as a strong 3wood and bring your regular driver around.

If you know you're playing a shorter course where you're not going to need to hit a 3w off the deck you can loft down and use it as a driver.

To me a big massive face is a lot more confidence inspiring than these clubs. I suppose some people just don't get on with drivers.
Hugh Rogers
Hugh Rogers - 5 years ago
+Cornwall1888 Opposite for me. 440cc+ drivers are off putting. Feels like swinging a balloon on the end. I don't have a problem with drivers per se, just the obsession makers have with size. My current driver is 380cc. This sort of club would appeal to someone like me who wants a smaller head but a driver loft, which you can't get using a 3W. I don't get the 'confidence' thing of big heads, when most players will carry a 3 or 5W and/or hybrids as well. I find hybrids silly easy to hit and my Callaway 3H has replaced my 5W for better consistency and similar distance.

What's the difference between a mini driver and a full size one obviously that it's smaller but is that it? If so why would you want a smaller driver?
CRope4clemson
CRope4clemson - 5 years ago
+Ryan- RLT The mini driver also has a shorter shaft that a regular driver, and due to that the dispersion with a mini driver should be less than a regular driver.
Vici Martynov
Vici Martynov - 5 years ago
+Ryan- RLT its not really a driver, its a beefed up fairway wood, its a 1.5 wood. The advantage is that like a fairway wood, its easier to hit, its got a shallower face so you can hit it off the deck but, with a 12 deg loft it is strong enough to compete with a driver.
Jake
Jake - 5 years ago
+Ryan- RLT More confidence-inspiring with more loft on the face. That's what I could come up with. Which is weird for me to say because my driver is 11.5 degrees of loft and my SS is over 110MPH.
ChrisHelen McIntosh
ChrisHelen McIntosh - 5 years ago
Mark, thinking about your comments regarding where and why this club would sit in someones bag, could it be for the player/s that want to drop the woods from 3 clubs (driver, 3w, 5w) to 2 (mini + 4 wood), to pick up another wedge or even a closer hybrid combo? i see in some of your course vlogs the indecision between your 2 the 23 and the 19 is it? Could it be on the back of the situation where drivers and face tech are now reaching a maximised point and these minis can nearly get it out to driver length, but also offer more distance and forgiveness off the deck for longer 4's and par 5's? Could this be the thinking? pairing it with a 4 wood to remove the need for a 5wood or longer hitting hybrid? to close the gaps in the bag?
