Went to get a driver fitting earlier today... turns out the M2 was for me with the adila 70g x stiff shaft. Though I had an accident with the epic sub zero... I may or may not have cracked the face at the bottom 2 inches wide. The jailbreak really doesn't allow much give I guess haha. Sorry PGA Tour Superstore in Schaumberg, IL USA. Hope the factory can get it fixed!

Hi Rick, quick question. How can it be that you hit the middle of the face and still "only" get 1.44 on efficiency? ( in comparison with Justin Thomas, he has an average smash factor of 1.52)

AtienzaLouie - 3 years ago
With the weight back on the Callaway, it's no surprise the launch angle and thus spin are higher. Possibly the shaft on the Callaway has a lower kick as well, which along with the rear weight promotes a draw bias....

I am an average 16-18 handicapper. Yesterday I did a club fitting on both the M2 and the Epic. The M2 is VERY LOUD, but the black/white finish makes for a nice alignment aid. For me the M2 was slightly longer (4-5 yards, M2 about 275, Epic 270). However, I ended up placing an order for the Epic. I preferred the feel of the Epic and I felt more in control of the Epic. That was matched by the numbers which showed my grouping was more consistent with the Epic.

Honest truth is they are both great clubs, perfect for someone like me, very forgiving on mishits (even the mishits went 240).

I am planning to go to the US from Venezuela for the sole purpose of getting custom fit. 1) how can I tell when the fitter is brand bias. 2) any to get the most out of my custom fitting. For people abroad specially in south America is an important investment which we cant afford to get it wrong. Thank you.

I would love to see a head to head between the sub zero and the M1 with the weight almost or all the way forward. Or maybe since you don't spin it very much then Pete could could compare the two because I know he uses the M1 with the spin weight pretty forward.

Rick, is it bad for my game to hit my irons very far? My seven iron carries 192yds. But I make only 90% effort.
qudjy1
qudjy1 - 3 years ago
So, basically not much difference. When you factor in a tiny bit more loft on the GBB, and tiny performance differences in swings / strikes, you basically have clubs that are at the very limit of allowed performance. In theory, if he used the GBB sub zero in same loft and shaft, he would have gotten the spin down, and gotten more out of it. Either way, good clubs both of them, up to personal preference...

Thanks Rick for the great review. Looks like the M2 is straighter with dispersion 15 Vs 20.
Can you please test the M1 & M2 12 Deg heads set 1 deg open. Think there is a market here for established players at SS 97-103mph, who draw the ball. Cally only has 13.5 IMO is too much loft to open up

I'm confused about this test, wouldn't the M2 and Callaway epic subzero be a closer comparison to test against each other since they are both supposed to be low spinning drivers? Then compare the new M1 to the regular epic?
Kevin Stanley
Kevin Stanley - 3 years ago
Great vid Rick. I want your swing! Was actually quite surprised you didn't get further distance with the TM M2. Before you started hitting balls, you had both clubs in hand. It looked like the TM shaft was considerably longer than the Epic shaft. Then in the vid while you were discussing the numbers, you had both clubs leaning against your desk. Again TM looked longer. Can you tell us if the shafts were the same length and if not, why the TM didn't go farther for you?

Great test, result; nothing in it. All down to personal taste. (Was there any reason for doing 5 + 5 x2 as opposed to 2 x10?) I think the Callaway is prettier. But your dispersion on this is like a machine! awesome striking sir!

the one thing about "jailbreak" is Callaway is normally the company with loud clubs and now they have just a solid sound. Some great strikes by you. When you middle it, given regulations, you have to expect the performance will be same. I still prefer the look of last year's M2 driver and M1 fairway.

I have been watching your videos and have enjoyed them so much that I have
now subscribed. I like to see the new equipment reviews but I still use
the Taylormade Burner 2.0 irons as I have not tested anything that
would convince me to update, as of yet. I would love to see an older vs.
newer club head to head test, i.e. the Burner 2.0 vs. the RSI 1 irons, just to
see the comparison of the difference, and how much difference, there is between the older and newer models.
Thank you for the time and effort that you put into your channel.

In looking at the numbers it was shot 5 with the Epic, a slice 44 yards right that spun over 3,000 that really changed the averages for the Callaway. Was it a bad swing or would you say the M2 is more forgiving?

Very interesting comparison - especially in conjunction with the club data - thank you!
If I pick the variances of the smash factor, it is interesting to see, that the Epic had a range between 1.39 and 1.48 with a std. dev. of 0.03,
and the M2 had a range between 1.43 and 1.47 with a std. dev. of 0.01!
I expected that it would be the other way round, but it seems, that the M2 is the more forgiving AND the longer club - despite its lower loft within this test!

Rick i love your videos however do you really think it is fair to compare two drivers with the exact same shaft? i mean if that rogue is the best shaft for you in the M2... then that doesn't mean it would be the ideal shaft in the Epic right. So the test is really which driver is better with the Rouge 70 X, and not which driver is better. I would love for you to dial in each driver with the best shaft and then go head to head with them. I would love to hear some feedback from you on this sir.

Great video Rick! have you ever thought about a review of the ping iblades with the power spec lofts?? I got fitted for them this week and the ping fitter suggested that the power specs would be a great tune for my swing to bring the flight and spin rates down just a bit. It's said to give you gains of about 5-7 yards per club. Thanks, keep up the great vids!

Rick I have a question for ya. If both drivers have the same length shaft, loft, lie and weight and both driver come from the factories with the max legal COR if you put both drivers on a robot swing machine wouldn't you think they would have identical results? So why do manufactures say there club will go further than another if all manufactures have to comply to the same rules. So as a consumer I'm I only selecting clubs based on feel and looks?
Howie Land
Howie Land - 3 years ago
It does seem like it comes down mostly to feel and looks, but forgiveness and shaft are also important considerations. Also, I don't know if using the same shaft in 2 different drivers makes total sense, because I wouldn't think 1 shaft would be ideal for 2 different clubheads. Of course, getting the best shaft for each club would be quite an effort.

pilchtastic I agree pressure is a mental thing. However to say it doesn't exist out of your mind is too simple. Pressure is also based on being able to handle expectations of yourself and others. Most people need to experience this first hand to learn how best to turn their anxiety into a potential positive outcome.

Rick, great video here. Thanks for sharing. I've had a few suggestions for videos if you could find the time. 1. Start a "quest to single digits" video series for Rob Potter. Would be great to follow you coaching him and vlogging with him to get him down to single digits. 2. Would love to see you do a test of your current irons and compare them with a variance of shafts. I know you always use X100's but would love to see what happens to your numbers and dispersion when you switch shafts on your current irons. Thanks for all of your videos Rick!!
