No they aren't, everyone knows it but there are enough people with more money than sense along with inflated opinions of themselves to make it a viable business. Q- What clubs do out of contract tour pros play? A- The best.

PXG clubs are the a prime example of the placebo effect. They cost more so they have to be the best right? No it's just Bob Parsons said F it i want to make my own golf clubs. So he paid a shit ton of money to hire guys from ping and to sign pros to endorse the clubs . He needs to recoup that money somehow.

I think PXG clubs are absolutely worth it. It's human nature for people without the means to look down on people who do have the means to buy nice things.

Seems like the pros who are using them and not really doing that much better. Breaks down to that old saying, "It is the indian, not the arrow."

I’m not into my watches or cars etc etc, my only real hobby is golf and so I think I would be happy to treat myself to these clubs. However, my only concern would be about longevity of the models.

I think I’d begrudge spending £3k on irons and a driver if they replaced the models the next year so be interesting to see if they go the Taylormade or Titleist route of model updates
Jonas
Jonas - 2 years ago
Fair point - PXG have had the same model of iron since 2014. So 4 years (their Gen 2 is about to launch) is a fair amount of time for the investment. I used to play the Callaway pro series, and at $1400 a set, it bothered me a bit when there was a new model every 6 - 12 months.

Pxg are run by a idiot triphy hunter ego maniac. Wudnt touch their junk if they paid me also. Pxg are not honma and pxg dont come across luxury to me, their owner and their adverts come across cheap and brash.

PXG are for guys with too much money, not enough sense and probably tiny little Willies! They are like guys who need to drive round in Porsche's just to feel good about themselves.
Bandit Baker

Possibly so Jonas, but not in my case. I owned a 911 20 years ago and found it to be the most over rated sports car ever, I have also given away more money to charity than most will ever make. Contentment comes from within, not from things.

People that typically make comments like this are ones who wish they had a Porsche and a set of PXG's in the passenger seat.

I think the analogy using the cars is a bit inaccurate. There are certain limitations with what can be done with clubs. There are clear differences in performance with cars, whether you are talking speed, safety, technology, or luxury, than with golf clubs. The question for me is if you paid for a high end fitting (in the U.S., I did one at Club Champion in Maryland for a full bag that was $150 U.S. in the off season that lasted about 4 hours) could you get a set of clubs that performed just as well or better than what PXG offered with $$$ to spare for lessons or more golf?

i would never fear playing against someone who has a set of shiny PXG clubs in the bag. Someone with a set of banged up mp 68s...? different story.

The analogies comparing expensive clubs to other expensive things are never even in the same realm. A more expensive car like a Porsche over a economy car are more than just looks, there are very obvious performance differences between the two among other objective things. A better comparison would be like saying a car manufacturer produces the same car but its re-branded for another company and is sold at less than half the price. That's pretty much what pxg clubs are, expensive clubs with really no gain over other offerings. if there was a big performance difference don't you think every tour pro once their club contracts were up would play pxg clubs?

But sure if you got the cash and just want the most expensive thing out there go for it but don't expect to play any better than with cheaper clubs.

£300 per iron is madness, especially when irons like pxg are just a fancy blade. These type of irons haven't really changed for years. I'm guessing a 20 yr old mizuno would do the same job. Just golf snobbery in my eyes. £875 for a driver is still nuts but at least its not a million miles away from other top brands. Think most peoples money would be better spent on lessons and would definitely improve there golf experiences. Great video all the same

Golf clubs are simple mechanical devices, don’t be deceived by marketing. You’re better off investing in lessons

marketing hype at its best!! !! PXG are creating an elitest brand in an already flooded and proven market. if they were that good why are the top tour players still using Taylormade, Titleist etc..?? ridiculous price point as well.. I cant see them proving popular at all?!!
Elliot Hand
Elliot Hand - 2 years ago
ray oakes top players were asked to do an anonymous survey last year and asked if not sponsored which brand of irons would they like to play with and majority said Mizunho. Most players don’t play with them though because of sponsorship.

Think you need to question if PxG are spending the same as Taylormade on sponsoring players as that’ll be the biggest driver (pun intended) as to what club they use.

If you’re interested most said they’d choose Pro V1 balls whilst driver choices were split much more evenly.

I think it is in the fitting ! If the other manufacturers spent as long in doing the fitting and had the knowledge on the shafts , that would be worth more than the hardware..

My thoughts exactly. I don't understand why there are some (a limited few i hope) who reacts negatively to people who buy PXG clubs. It's your money - what you want to do with it is up to you.
Daniel Hendricks

even if no other club was better for me then the pxg i still would buy, simply because there is no way in hell I am spending $5000 on iron, Just iron (i say $5000 cause I live in Australia)

Great vlog, Joel! If I had PXG kind of money, I wouldn't buy PXG, but I would pay for an expert custom fitting, instead of just the basic fitting for free at a local golf shop.
Jonas
Jonas - 2 years ago
Good thing with PXG you don't "pay" for the fitting - it's included. You also have service down the line if you need to adjust. Hard to knock the PXG until you hit one and experience for yourself. The feel and confidence are top notch.

Absolute lunacy. The only people who are playing PXG are the people on tour who don't pay for their clubs, and the super rich. If they were that good then surely everyone on tour would be playing them.
Gerry Uretsky
Gerry Uretsky - 2 years ago
Rich W, Your comment assumes that golfers who are playing PXG clubs on tour don't pay for their clubs. All sources I've seen, say that they do pay for their PXG clubs. PXG doesn't give any golfers free clubs or pay tour players to play them...yet.

At the end of the day, it still boils down to your swing. No club will get you from a 20+ to single digits. For me personally, it's about getting that little bit of extra help (either psychological or the stronger lofts or feel or whatever). I haven't changed clubs in 20years so i reasoned I owed myself a treat. Got fitted and have been using them for 3 mos now - no regrets. :-)

They are retirement presents. A proper fitting will show that other brands are equal or better at a fraction of the cost.

I like the vlog... I’ve done a few fittings and I think the top brands are a muchness given the tech reg limits. I’d say getting the right shaft tuned for your swing is the key now. I’ve recently got fitted for a certain shaft by mizuno and used it in my current ping i200 set up. The two were so close as irons. I’ve also recently changed the fitting on a driver shaft I used on a nike driver to use on my Ping G. It has improved my consistency over the ping tour shaft I was using.

if it's really that cold - i'd never do a fitting. You're going to be swinging slower and the ball will feel harder and fly shorter than normal. It makes sense that you fit into a lighter iron shaft - but when summer comes you may find that dispersion increases as your speed does.
Jonas
Jonas - 2 years ago
I was thinking the same thing. But I think they only have the one fitter in the UK so he had to jump on the chance.
Elliot Hand
Elliot Hand - 2 years ago
TXchadTX I agree with this, I swing very differently and much more freely in the summer without layers of coats and jumpers on etc.

I have the 0811XF irons and they are the best feeling clubs that I've ever used. I was looking for a forgiving forged iron and at the time of purchase there weren't many, if any " game improvement " clubs that were forged on the market. Are they worth the money ? Because of my positive experience i'd say yes.
slc5245
slc5245 - 2 years ago
I have the XF on my 6 and 5 and the standard ones from 7 to W. They are definitely more expensive than the other high end clubs out there - but I've tried about 10 of the other high end ones (even trying Muira in Tokyo). The feel of PXG is really different and I love it - but also, maybe due to the stronger lofts (or the tech, or both) - I'm hitting one club longer than my old clubs. As for forgiveness, with all the clubs I've tried, PXG comes out on top, hands down. Becasue of this, it gives me more confidence whenever I step up to a shot - and this for me, is what makes them worth the money.

Very good and honest breakdown. Interesting point that a fitter can always get you extra performance because they're able to tweak to exactly how you're swinging on the day, whereas your current club is stuck with whatever shaft and setup you took it in with.

I just think PXG are just too pretentious. They're not any better than other manufacturers - even though they (self) proclaim to be the greatest clubs ever made (period!). I'd just feel like a knob using them, no matter how much money I had. They don't even look high end, they look tacky & unfinished. Not for me. If someone gave me a set I'd just sell them on ebay then buy myself some nice new Mizunos.

I agree with you man. Basically it was just bob parsons going F it I want to make my own clubs because i have the money to do so. I'd rather have some sweet mizuno's or Srixon. PXG are just ping with more money thrown at it. He hired two old ping executives to design the technology.
