Great Science, Cheating it is not so if you and your friends are in the know! LazerDrive Golf club coating works amazing, you use such a ridiculously small amount that you can't see it. It clearly has helped me in my game now I enjoy hitting longer straight Tee shots instead of those wicked slices I had before. LazerDrive golf makes the game fun again.

Try something sticky such as glue for opposite effect creating even more spin and see if that works since losing spin made distance loss

The reason to use the vaseline has nothing much to do with distance, it is for hackers that are constantly slicing or hooking the ball. You never talked about the dispersion rates and a quick look back reveals that with the lube it was 4.5 or so from center and without the lube it was 14.0 or so. You are obviously a good golfer, but for weekend hacks there dispersion rate without the lube would be way higher than yours, but with the lube, assuming they can aim it would be similar to yours. Lube = way less left and right not really distance. With no spin the ball has to go straight. You need to do it again with a beginner golfer, then you will really see some results. If you are a good golfer, you can gain distance because it gives you the ability to do a ridiculous John Daly type swing and the ball will still go straight. Try again, I would love to see it.

You have completely missed the point. A greased club face is not for guys that can hit the ball straight. It's for duffers who, because of SIDE spin always slice the ball. Then it makes a difference. BTW, you used too much. If you ain't cheatin' you don't want badly enough to win.

Have you done a video with foot powder? The goal with foot powder is to show where on the clubface, you just struck the ball. So, a sampling of 5-10 shots from an amateur should show quite a variance from the sweet spot and if you measure the distance on the face you get an idea of how much distance is lost by off-center hits. You can do the test with club face stickers, too. In fact, with stickers you can use a pen to write the shot number by the mark of the shot. I keep meaning to play a round with a sticker on my driver and measure the shot distance with rollout & mark each hole number on the face next to its mark.

A LPGA player showed a slice fix years ago. (Not for tournament play) Many amateurs have an open stance and don't realize it. The club hits the ball squarely; but the head is traveling to the inside. This puts a spin on the ball (clockwise for a righty) that pulls it to the right, a slice. Put a club on the ground, on a straight line to the target. Place your toes touching the club. Now you have a square stance. The club head hits squarely and is not hitting the ball with the inward angle. No inward horizontal club head motion; no or little horizontal spin, no or little slice. The first time you do this, take your regular stance, mark ground at tip of forward toe; then use the club on the ground trick. You'll be surprised how unintentionally open your regular stance has been.

i wonder if you put the jelly on the balls surface and hit it if the results would be better. i'm just thinking the jelly on the club face only contacts one spot on the ball and probably would leave some jelly residue on the ball. then you would have a ball trying to spin but being slowed by the little bit of jelly in only one spot? but if the jelly was on the ball it would be coated more evenly and spin better ?

Just came across this video. I'd like to see more shots from each club. it's not conclusive but the shots seemed to be straighter with the jelly. So you lost 10 yards of carry, you'll likely end up at the same spot with the added roll but if you have less side spin and can stay in the fairway, that's worth a couple of strokes.

sorry to say this but when you said less friction with the ball will make the ball go longer, makes absolutely no sense, if you had less friction tge ball would lose distance.
bogushavis
bogushavis - 3 years ago
More friction = more backspin.
High backspin (over 2500rpm) = less distance. Ball flies up too high and falls straight down. No roll out.
Low backspin (under 1800rpm) = less distance. Ball flies too low, hits the ground too soon. Good roll out, but the loss of carry cancels the roll.
He already has perfect backspin, so it actually hurt his distance.

I have a set of Yonex carbon irons & used to get them refinished and Lacquered each year, they used to fly forever but would not bite.  I let a tour play with them one year  and he told that on longer courses some of the tour players would Lacquer the face of their drivers, this is 30 yrs ago so I don't think any of them are still playing today

And FYI, tour pros frequently find ways to apply "foreign substances" to their club faces in various ways, e.g. applied via head covers, towels, and many ways that I can't imagine.

1:15 That's not a thin coat. You need it to be a lot thinner than that for optimum performance. Plus it's obvious that the amount you put on is far too conspicuous to playing partners.

Been doing this for a year.  First you put way too much on.  I put a dab on my towel before the round and then wipe the face of my driver with the towel so there is a very thin coat and nobody ever knows.  My normal solid hit drive is right around 250 but many times I will hook the ball and be in trouble..behind trees or deep rough.Since doing this I might have lost 5-10 yards on some drives but I hit 90% of the fairways instead of 40- 50%.  My partner even said  Dam you are like a machine straight as an arrow and I have NEVER been this way.Went from a 14 to a 10 last season and came in 4th in my club tourney when I never placed in the top 10 before.

Just adding some moisture to the face should bring the spin rate down slightly as well. Licking the clubface: -500 or -2500? Maybe a piece of paper with Canola oil? So many experiments!

It works and will keep drives in play that would otherwise be OB. They ought to legalize it on the grounds that any time you can keep your ball in bounds it's safer for everyone. Also, you would be penalized on the subsequent shot if there's residual jelly or chapstick on your ball that would hurt your approach shot(s).

Anytime you hit the ball nice and straight like you do, the ball is going to go farther without the lube (backspin=lift) the longer the ball is in the air the farther it is going to go. However, where the lube really helps is with side spin. Take someone who has a huge slice, lube up the driver and they get more distance! because the ball goes straight. Can't hit a slice with the lube ;0) as you mentioned it isn't legal ( unless everyone agrees your lame brother-in-law, who puts every drive in the jun,k needs all the help he can get)

You don't lose distance. It carries less but it literally rolls 80-100 yards once it hits the ground. Lip balm does it best. The amount of roll it produces is insane. With that 246 carry your drive would have ended around 340-350

The higher your club head speed the less 'friction on your club head' is your friend. Many clubs have micro texture on the driver face. You can tell if you rub your ball up and down, and then left and right, and see the difference in friction. The up and down is to promote back or forward spin, and help prevent side spin, but isnt necessarily your friend if you are looking for distance. People that use high spin balls and hook or slice (like a proV) are wasting strokes on the golf course. You could use a pinnacle and clean your driver with silicone or another slickening cleaner, and safe strokes. This isn't new. This has been around for years. On the course, its usually chap stick. And its illegal.

Only a 2-3 x per year golfer here so keeping that 'expertise' level in mind it just seems odd that this would be cheating yet if you just chose a different club designed to attain similar results it would be legal, right? Like you can have a different club, but you can't make a modification to the one you have? Are certain gloves illegal because you get "too" good a grip? It just doesn't feel like quite as serious a violation as say a pitcher using pine tar in baseball. What am I missing? I get that it significantly reduced the spin, but don't they make other brands/styles of legal drivers that spin less?
Gemlik Bass
Gemlik Bass - 3 years ago
And no, I don't think there are any gloves that are illegal. Maybe if you put a substance on them.
Gemlik Bass
Gemlik Bass - 3 years ago
It doesn't matter what club it is, you just can not put PJ on the face of the club so you create less spin off the tee. It's cheating. I don't understand your confusion. It's on the level of a pitcher with pine tar. Pro Golfers rarely cheat, PJ on the face of would be idiotic. That stuff would be easy to see, "Dude, what's on your driver??.... HEY!!!"

schwartzcolin50 it's amazing how far most people THINK they hit the ball. I measure 5-6 drives a round, some short, some long, some average so that I can keep kind of a running average, and I also twice a year have my swing speed measured and ball speed because matching these up with the proper launch angles etc is the best way to maximize distance and control.
I have a swing speed of 113 mph on average
109 on low end, 116 on high end, and I average carrying the ball 276 in the air. I am considerably longer than almost everyone I play with, and my speeds are close to "tour average" and I'm no where close to carrying 300 in the air consistently. Every great once in a while yes, but not consistently. These guys who think they do are oblivious honestly

1 - I think you missed a stat by not looking at the dispersion. That's what most amateurs are concerned with - you were much more consistent with the jelly face driver.
2 - Who cares if the ball flight is like a knuckleball? Most amateurs (myself included) can't shape shots anyways - especially off the tee. A straight drive will improve most people's scores, so does the ball falling out of the sky and being a little shorter really matter to most of us? If it's a more straight path (and more consistent) that's a lot better than most of us do otherwise.

I am a 12 handicap and My normal drive is in the 250 range but halfway through the season I started hooking and slicing the ball to the point I was putting 3-4 drives OB a round and a few others in deep rough or behind trees.  I started putting a very thin layer of Vaseline to my driver and was shocked at my ball going dead nuts straight.  I did not notice and distance loss. I did not lose any balls and was in the fairway 70-80% of the time instead of 40-50%.  Even my playing partners commented on how they have never seen my drive the ball so straight. I got the the point where I was a little worried they would find out because my ball never hooked or sliced.  The only way the ball would go off target if you lined up wrong or had a bad pull.  Even then it would be a straight off target shot.
bogushavis
bogushavis - 3 years ago
Just point your driver at your buddies before the round starts and say, "I've got Vaseline on the face of my driver today, Deal with it!"
Just get it out in the open and play without guilt.

I've played with guys who use a hard ball for par 5's and a spin ball for par 3's. Cheating.
I've played with guys who switch out for a "putting ball" on the green. Cheating.
I have friends who routinely go out with 15 or 16 clubs in the bag. 2 drivers in the bag, a left handed 7 iron, one of those chipper clubs. Cheating.
I know a guy who plays a 50 inch driver. It's not helping his game at all! Still cheating.
I sometimes find a ball in the weeds and tee it up and use it on the next hole. It isn't the same brand and model I started with. Cheating.

We are not playing for anybody's money so everyone needs to just chill out.

Bill M do you know why the old guys were beating you? because they weren't trying to beat the skin off the ball. If you tamed your swing down, you would become more accurate.
There's a great saying that golf doesn't build character, it reveals character.....and the fact that you feel the only way to 'compete' is to cheat reveals what kind of person you really are.
Bill M

Been playing for 15 years.  Play once or twice a week but never have time to practice. My drives were the one thing that was killing my game from being wild off the tee.  The old guys who drive the ball 200-220 but always straight were beating me.  Now the game is much more enjoyable.

For ALL the golfers who have A MAJOR SLICE OR HOOK some chap stick on your drive "MAKES THE GAME OF GOLF FUN AGAIN" I gladly sacrifice some distance and put my drive in the fairway in stead of slicing the ball in the tall weeds , in the lake, in the next fairway , in the trees, ETC. SORRY MAN i do use CHAPSTICK & don't tell the group of guys I play with. WE PLAY FOR FUN NOT FOR MONEY. I do believe this speeds the game up ,because i don't have to spend a lot of time looking for my drive and slowing our foursome up on every hole . JUST MY OPINION . PS , I did take many a lessons to FIX MY SLICE . IN THE END Chapstick won out & a lot cheaper.

Let me share the number 1 best tip for average golfers................... the harder you try to hit the ball the harder it is to hit the ball. For most of us we don't play 4-5 times a week so we can not expect to play like a pro, even though we may want to. You see Tiger Woods, John Daly etc plaster the ball and you want to do it too but you will only achieve it 1 in a hundred times because you don't play enough. IF you concentrate on swinging in what may seem like slow motion and use the proper wrist action you will hit the ball a good distance AND you will lower your scores which will give you more satisfaction than one big drive per round.
DonavanCMcCoy
DonavanCMcCoy - 3 years ago
No, geezus. The Number 1 tip is beer. 3 beers will loosen your wrists, ankles, hip joints enough to achieve what I call, " the perfect coil™." You want your ball to spin backwards.... because it's not spinning sideways. Vaseline is good on the inside middle finger of your right hand however. This will keep you from gripping too tight with your right hand, ( or left hand for all of you wrong-handed players). And it's legal.
Cool video man.

You completely missed the whole point of using petroleum jelly. It is for bad slices or hooks. I used to have a bad problem with slicing and it ruined my time because the ball would be in the woods. Then I starting "juicing" my driver face and the ball was always findable. So it is the side spin that matters!!!!!

Great video and song.

Also one more use of jelly is that you can tell where you hit the ball on the driver face.

Best Regards!

rotormitch
rotormitch - 3 years ago
I agree with you 100% however until I get it right using some Vaseline improves the time on the course because I don't waste as much time in the woods looking for a big slice. I've fixed my slice for the most part but it just gives me an edge if I fall back to old habits or have a bad day. It also lets you see exactly where the contact was on the club face.
Steve T
Steve T - 3 years ago
+rotormitch... you're not actually fixing the cause of the slice or hook, just masking it. You'll have better control if you "fix" the slice or hook habit with better hand positioning. Closing or opening the club face too much with your grip, swinging too steeply at the ball and incorrect hand positioning with either too weak or too strong a grip causing improper release during the swing, through impact with the ball, is the major cause of a slice. It only takes a few moments to correct, and a few practice swings to cure, and you'll notice the difference right away.

Does spin really create control? Maybe to a certain extent ("knuckleball"...), but IMHO more important is: It creates lift. There has to be a certain optimum between no and too much lift. 2,400 RPM for you?
T mo
T mo - 3 years ago
With your swing speed you can use 10.5 degree and be great with it. My normal swing speed is 95 mph but i can get 5 or 6 mph more when pushing it. I like to use my bazooka geomax 14* driver. It really is so forgiving when i am not hitting it as well. When i am playing well i will sometimes use my 10.5 and am just amazed just how far the ball will go. I NEVER put too much on the face. When you get below 1600 backspin the ball wont stay in the air as long. I think 1800-2000 backspin is perfect. There are some people who can find a driver that will produce those numbers off the rack but i havent. Glad you found out about this too. Hitting the ball straight turns the course into a much better place to be!!
bogushavis
bogushavis - 3 years ago
+T mo I also generate well over 4000 rpm of backspin. I gained 30 yards from Vaseline (275 yards with swing speed 105mph+).

But! I found that a super light coat was required. I cringed when I saw him slathering so much on the face. I knew the ball would just fall out of the sky with that much Vaseline.

Is that your experience as well?

If you have backspin over 2300 rpm you will benefit from grease. They always told me on the launch monitors that too much backspin was costing me much distance. I finally said what the hell i will do what Lee Trevino used to do, use vasoline. It brought my backspin from 4,500 rpm to 2,075. My distance improved greatly and always straight as an arrow. I play for fun and fun to me is SHOOTING an occasional 73 or 76 which i am doing!!!! 58 years old and having fun.

bogushavis
bogushavis - 3 years ago
I have tried this experiment too. If you spread the Vaseline on and let it form it's natural film thickness you will hit knuckle balls.
If you continue to rub and thin out the coat, it "might" increase your distance.

If you are getting good height on your tee shots and are getting 20+ yards of roll, you likely don't have a spin problem.
If you are already getting an optimum spin rate from your swing and equipment, Vaseline will straighten your ball flight while killing your distance.

If your tee shots launch low or mid and shots are stopping where they land (i.e. carry distance = total distance). You have too much backspin.
A very thin coat of Vaseline will cause your shots to launch higher and roll out farther.

I find it very helpful on the range. A super thin coat makes the range balls fly very similar to the ProVIx with a clean face. This way I get to see the ball flight I'm used to seeing on the course, instead of the overspinny range ball flight I get with a dry face. I can check the impact mark to see that I'm getting good center face contact which is good for practice.

It's an experiment only, for the range or when you are playing alone. Get caught with Vaseline in competition or even with your buddies and you'll be marked for life as a golf cheat. We all know who those people are and we never forget.

All this is dependent upon IF you get a center strike. The average duffer hits the ball all over the club face and that's the problem. That's why the ball goes everywhere. Practice hitting the ball in the sweet spot and you're golden. You can buy a driver that will give you about 2400 RPM and you'll be fine.

You don't have to cake it on. I use this trick cheating in tournaments all the time with Carmex and Bullfrog sunscreen that's clear. LOL. I live in Texas....so applying sunscreen often does not look suspicious at all and if some "accidentally" gets on the driver face. In the winter switch to Carmex.

Sure it's cheating but we're not playing is USGA sanctioned events and is it really cheating if you don't get caught? I'm thinking you put some Vaseline on your lips then kiss your driver face before you tee off and tell your playing partners "it's for good luck". Boom.

Man there are a lot of panties in this comment section and they are all bunched. Lighten up, my comment was a joke just like the video was.

Another experiment could be something like does the weight of a head driver influence distance.
Where a too light head don't generate enough speed at the bottom of the swing and when with too much weight you start to swing slower.

Is this experment done before?

Howie Land
Howie Land - 3 years ago
+Kourtney Knowles I'm intrigued. Would you say the long irons would be better suited to average-to-higher swing speeds? I'm thinking the short shaft and flat face would be hard to elevate the ball high enough with a slow swing speed. Thx. btw, great results with the new sticks!
Kourtney Knowles
Kourtney Knowles - 3 years ago
Caleb Davis I'm a scratch golfer and switched to them the start of this year. Took about 2 weeks to adjust but I think they are much better than conventional length clubs. I've shot 64 (-8) twice with them this year which is my personal best and I play and practice much less than I used to. The long irons are much much easier to hit and control for me.

Interesting experiment Randy. It certainly appears the spin was lowered significantly due to the reduced friction from the Vaseline coating. The results of your testing raises the question; Would this principal be something manufacturers might want to look at for spin reduction? Now I don't mean using petroleum jelly, but what about some other type of low friction face material, like a Teflon coating?

The current trend by manufacturers looking to reduce driver spin is to move weight forward. Unfortunately this also results in a reduced MOI and forgiveness. However, based on your testing, I think that with the right material we could design a driver that has weight pushed back for increased MOI and forgiveness, while simultaneously keeping spin down with reduced friction off the Teflon face. The perfect driver!

Damn Randy, why didn't you do this video before they selected the contestant for "Driver vs Driver"!! We could've won that $500K :-)

I understand that you are not allowed to manipulate your clubs by lubricating them. But I am surprised that manufacturers don't use some kind of low spin coating or polishing for the low spin versions of their drivers (or do they? if so, at least I never heard it advertised that way). I am sure they could come up with something that is according to the rules and still manages to reduce friction, like a thin layer of teflon or something like that.

So what you're saying is lubed heads produce higher ball speeds and straighter drives. Got it :-) Would love to see a "wedge approach" video showing 80 yard, 50 yard and 30 yard approach shots to a green with 3 or 4 different wedge lofts. Would be interesting to see how these wedges hold the greens in terms of spin and descending angles. I've always felt that throwing it up high and landing it soft was the way to go but I've read that lower lofted wedges give you more control and spin. It's something I plan to experiment with this coming spring. Great video and cover song :-)

T mo
T mo - 3 years ago
For the golfer using a lofted driver (12-16 degree) 4,500 rpm the grease would produce a much longer drive. And straight as an arrow. Young studs with 115 swing speed dont see any improvement but old farts with 95 mph swing speed will be able to out drive their old friends by a great distance. I first learned about the trick by Lee Trevino!!!! I think he won a few tournaments or so. There are many college golfers who played their way through college with green life savers and chapstick. This is fact and it is cheating in a usga regulated tournament. Some people just play for fun though.

Randy, you mentioned the lubed (does sound dirty doesn't it?) clubs spin rate was way too low but could you give us a feeling for what the 10.5 degree driver optimal stats should be for launch angle, spin rate, anything else? Or should we just assume the first club was considered optimal? Thanks.

As he mentioned in the clip both with his ballspeed both launch angle and spin are too high. I would say ideal conditions for his swing speed would be around 12,5-13,5 launch angle and 2500-2750 rpm.
