Petroleum Jelly on a Driver Face

In this experiment I take a Callaway Fusion driver and cover the face in petroleum jelly to see if it increases accuracy and/or distance. Laugh, Subscribe, Play... 10. comment for Petroleum Jelly on a Driver Face
Interesting video! How about greasing up the ball instead? Same result, or?

Without the grooves ?
Will it reduce spins ?
What device are you using to measure ball speed, launch, carry, etc...?

She didn't like it
Honestly at first I thought "oh sh!t Flaming Lips! Great choice!" Then realized you redid it, effing classic!!
And I ALWAYS hit the face with my shots

High backspin (over 2500rpm) = less distance. Ball flies up too high and falls straight down. No roll out.
Low backspin (under 1800rpm) = less distance. Ball flies too low, hits the ground too soon. Good roll out, but the loss of carry cancels the roll.
He already has perfect backspin, so it actually hurt his distance.
Just adding some moisture to the face should bring the spin rate down slightly as well. Licking the clubface: -500 or -2500? Maybe a piece of paper with Canola oil? So many experiments!
But the Flaming Lips remix.....Epic (Callaway pun intended)
nice song
I have a swing speed of 113 mph on average
109 on low end, 116 on high end, and I average carrying the ball 276 in the air. I am considerably longer than almost everyone I play with, and my speeds are close to "tour average" and I'm no where close to carrying 300 in the air consistently. Every great once in a while yes, but not consistently. These guys who think they do are oblivious honestly
2 - Who cares if the ball flight is like a knuckleball? Most amateurs (myself included) can't shape shots anyways - especially off the tee. A straight drive will improve most people's scores, so does the ball falling out of the sky and being a little shorter really matter to most of us? If it's a more straight path (and more consistent) that's a lot better than most of us do otherwise.
Just get it out in the open and play without guilt.
I've played with guys who use a hard ball for par 5's and a spin ball for par 3's. Cheating.
I've played with guys who switch out for a "putting ball" on the green. Cheating.
I have friends who routinely go out with 15 or 16 clubs in the bag. 2 drivers in the bag, a left handed 7 iron, one of those chipper clubs. Cheating.
I know a guy who plays a 50 inch driver. It's not helping his game at all! Still cheating.
I sometimes find a ball in the weeds and tee it up and use it on the next hole. It isn't the same brand and model I started with. Cheating.
We are not playing for anybody's money so everyone needs to just chill out.
There's a great saying that golf doesn't build character, it reveals character.....and the fact that you feel the only way to 'compete' is to cheat reveals what kind of person you really are.
Cool video man.
Great video and song.
Also one more use of jelly is that you can tell where you hit the ball on the driver face.
Best Regards!
Mitch
But! I found that a super light coat was required. I cringed when I saw him slathering so much on the face. I knew the ball would just fall out of the sky with that much Vaseline.
Is that your experience as well?
If you continue to rub and thin out the coat, it "might" increase your distance.
If you are getting good height on your tee shots and are getting 20+ yards of roll, you likely don't have a spin problem.
If you are already getting an optimum spin rate from your swing and equipment, Vaseline will straighten your ball flight while killing your distance.
If your tee shots launch low or mid and shots are stopping where they land (i.e. carry distance = total distance). You have too much backspin.
A very thin coat of Vaseline will cause your shots to launch higher and roll out farther.
I find it very helpful on the range. A super thin coat makes the range balls fly very similar to the ProVIx with a clean face. This way I get to see the ball flight I'm used to seeing on the course, instead of the overspinny range ball flight I get with a dry face. I can check the impact mark to see that I'm getting good center face contact which is good for practice.
It's an experiment only, for the range or when you are playing alone. Get caught with Vaseline in competition or even with your buddies and you'll be marked for life as a golf cheat. We all know who those people are and we never forget.
Seeing "what could be" if they got their swing working right might be a good selling tool for lessons.
Man there are a lot of panties in this comment section and they are all bunched. Lighten up, my comment was a joke just like the video was.
Integrity- knowing the difference between right and wrong; doing the right thing even when know one is looking.
Every first tee child in the country knows this. Seems like some adults need a refresher.
Where a too light head don't generate enough speed at the bottom of the swing and when with too much weight you start to swing slower.
Is this experment done before?
The current trend by manufacturers looking to reduce driver spin is to move weight forward. Unfortunately this also results in a reduced MOI and forgiveness. However, based on your testing, I think that with the right material we could design a driver that has weight pushed back for increased MOI and forgiveness, while simultaneously keeping spin down with reduced friction off the Teflon face. The perfect driver!
Damn Randy, why didn't you do this video before they selected the contestant for "Driver vs Driver"!! We could've won that $500K :-)
No Randy the Tee Shirt!! Sorry.
YT is s b*tch
ball, as it were.
Ah that's it, a running farting clown lol
