Ping G400 Max Driver Review

Ping G400 Max Driver Review Ping go for all out forgiveness and ball speed with the confidence-inspiring G400 Max writes equipment editor James Savage Review: Ping G400 Max driver Our Ping G400 Max driver review took place at Pete Cowen golf Academy in Rotherham and at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, Abu Dhabi. The headcovers are exactly the same as the other three Ping G400 drivers – standard, LST and SFT. Ping G400 Max driver And this driver looks very similar to the other Ping G400 drivers as you would expect with the same design on the crown, same shaft, same colours etc… But this driver just has a bit more mass and a larger footprint to give you maximum confidence at address. As you can see from the image above, the G400 Max on the right does look bigger. It also has a silver, rather than a black face which seems to give the impression of presenting more loft at the address position. The Ping G400 Max driver is already ticking a lot of boxes for me. I loved the G400 but I did find the head to be a little bit more compact than what I was used to with my TaylorMade M2. Now I feel like the Ping G400 Max driver is filling me with those same confidence levels. Sounds great doesn’t it, but how have Ping achieved these performance gains? The forgiveness gains are attributable to the 460cc head and nearly four times the discretionary weight created by Dragonfly crown technology and a thin, forged face. Its high-density tungsten back weight wraps around the back of the sole to help bring the combined MOI over 9,900 – that’s about as high as is possible. Ping say the CG position is lower and farther back than any current driver on the market which makes it the most forgiving driver in golf – surpassing their current G400 driver. Ping G400 Max driver review – The results Ping G400 Max driver I hit a range of shots and paid attention to the sound, feel and then the numbers from my SkyTrak launch monitor. I’m mainly looking at launch, spin, ball speed, carry and total distance. On the sound, I didn’t feel like it was quite as sweet as the G400 but it was still much improved on the previous G and G30 drivers. One of the Ping G400 Max driver’s main strengths seems to be its performance on off-centre hits – my speciality. Ping G400 Max driver There were a few times where I struck it near to the heel or toe and was expecting to see huge drop offs in carry but they never came. The carry was consistently over 220 yards, the ball speed was often over 140mph and the total was regularly over 250 yards. For anyone who has read any of my previous drivers reviews, you’ll know they are all very good numbers – for me. The best shot I hit carried 236 and ran out to 264. Not impressive to the big hitters but they are as good as it gets in my world. The dispersion looks a bit wayward but that’s down to me failing to pick out a consistent target line at the driving range as much as anything. We’ll put the G400 and the G400 Max head to head on the golf course and see which finds the most fairways. Ping G400 Max driver review – NCG verdict Ping G400 Max driver I’m really pleased the Ping G400 Max driver had been launched. I wasn’t expecting it and it has come as a welcome surprise. I’m a huge fan of the G400 and I especially loved the looks, sound and feel. But it just didn’t fill me with as much confidence as other drivers out there. So I feel like it’s now ticking ALL the boxes for me. I think golfers will transition into the Ping G400 Max driver much more easily from the G and G30 as it has that same ‘largeness’ at address. It really does make you feel like you’re not going to miss. And it’s going to be really hard for me NOT to put this driver into play for 2018. Well done Ping, again. Karl Man I play off 17. The driver is ideal for high handicap players. But tour players love it to so it’s a great all-rounder

Great review.... I appreciate your enthusiasm. Nothing like the feeling of getting it out to some new numbers that help you reach for a few more wedges. Good on you James. Enjoy !!!

What do you think about the standard length shaft? It's a little long. Did you go with a shorter shaft?
National Club Golfer
National Club Golfer - 3 years ago
Douglas Prechtel Hi Douglas the shaft was 45 3/4 - the exact same length as in the regular G400. I haven’t tried this driver in a shorter shaft. I can see the benefits of a shorter shaft but always try and test things in similar specs so the comparisons are fair.

What are your thoughts on its sound, James?

Lee (formerly Cahnt) Not quite as sweet as the regular G400 but a million times better than G and G30

G400 Max vs Rogue vs F8? Your numbers say G400 but would like your opinion.
National Club Golfer
National Club Golfer - 3 years ago
William Russell We’ve got some new numbers for Rogue and F8 on the way. The Rogue has ball speed over 150. The F8 looks and sounds amazing. But at the moment, I’m putting G400 Max in my bag...

Hi James
you didn't mention dispersion or give the numbers
I've got no problem with distance its where the ball goes that hurts my game
thanks
National Club Golfer
National Club Golfer - 3 years ago
Mark Rowley Hi Mark, left to right dispersion will only tell you about my swing. It doesn’t really tell you what the driver does. Ball speed, spin, carry and total do that. But with the G400 Max they were going nice and straight for me! Drop me an email to j.savage@sportspub.co.uk and I can send you the groupings if you want them. Thanks for the comments

Really like the way you’ve shot this video. Presentation of the data is excellent. Looks like the G400 Max could give the Rogue and Twist Face drivers a run for their money this year...

Really can't see why anyone wouldn't use the max over every other version. Every max review I have see even has the spin numbers in the low 2000s in 4-5 different reviews.

There's a reason 25% of all ping staffers have put this in the bag already including Tony Finau. Great numbers and review.

William Russell Thanks for the feedback William. Yes, it would be very hard to make a case for using another G400 driver. Maybe the smaller head makes it easier to shape the ball? I’m not looking to shape it, I want to hit it straight and as far as possible!! Thanks for watching

gary smith6 Hi Gary - yes you need to check this driver out. Can’t really knock the Twist Face though - they’ve had 4 wins in 4 weeks!

Very impressive numbers indeed, I was planning to change my G30 SFT for the G400 SFT this year but it looks as though I will have to add the MAX onto the options list.

Bandit Baker - 3 years ago
Yes I will do, if PING brought out a SFT version of the MAX then my life would be complete.
Ps thanks for an excellent review
National Club Golfer
National Club Golfer - 3 years ago
Bandit Baker Absolutely. Be sure to try them both out. The tech in the SFT really does work. But if you want a simple, confidence inspiring, neutral driver for 2018 the G400 Max needs to be in the mix.
