Please reconsider the distance para meter as the Ping G 400 is half a degree weaker and still has gone four yards ahead so in this para meter Ping wins !!!
Please reconcile.

man such a tough one this rick and the fact there are so close on performance too.my heart will have to rule this one so will have to be taylormade for me,i have the rsi 1's in the bag at the mo, so i really like they have kept that same stile going. the m-cgb would be my next set of irons id be looking at replacing my rsi's . great head to head

And then to ask the general public which one looks better who the f*** cares if I'm going to pay 800 plus dollars for a club to improve my game I'm certainly not going to care about how it looks all I care about is how it works.

Do looks help your score? No. I say Ping wins on several measures. First, Ping's customization system will fit you easily and better. Second, Ping costs less. Lastly, I think the Ping did slightly better on distance.

Great video as ever Rick. G400 for me as I like the more simple design. The Taylormade just looks to busy and gimmicky for me. Wish you would show dispersion figures on your tests as I think most golfers would choose straightness over distance in iron all day, cheers Andy

throw in the hogan H I to the party. i got a set of g400 a month ago. i tried the M1 as well as AP1, hot metals, senior graphite. so much more carry with the g400s. i give up some spin and not as easy to work it around the course. and i'm back to having a 4 iron in the bag

Looks is personal, who cares if thousand other people agrees with you or not. Comparing distance is completely pointless. Side spin is up to the golfer skills, no club will side spin more than the other (the R&A will make sure of that). Stop doing those video it's a waste of time...

Looks-wise they are both a bit cluttered on the back though when looking at them when paying they have a high Wow Factor.

I own a set of M1s and did try the G400 before buying. I admit I prefer the looks of the M1 over the G400. I struggled with the G400 compared with the M1, almost certainly the player not the club! When I struck the G400 reasonably well there was little difference between the clubs, both give a lovely high ball flight, for distance both were a good club longer than my old clubs and both gave me enough spin to stop a 7i pretty quickly on a green (I could not control the M2).

Rick's review pretty much matched my views of both clubs. A great alternative is the MP18-MMCs - ignore anyone who tells you these are better player irons not GI irons, if you can play the M1s you can play the MMCs, MMCs are weaker lofts so not as long as M1s

One other category that might be considered would be what I call "truth in advertising". Do the clubs do what the manufacturer says they will do? There are a lot of claims made by these club manufacturers and do the clubs live up to these claims. I thought when I hit the G400 that they really did live up to it being a game improvement stick with a hot face and higher ball flight and forgiving when not struck purely. Just a thought.

The problem Rick has,and it's an issue for all YouTube testers,is that the leading manufacturers don't like them discussing price . Taylormade execs would be choking on their cornflakes if Rick points out there's nothing between these two sets of irons yet the Ping are £200 cheaper!! You can't blame Rick for not wanting to rock the boat too much.

It's possible Rick simply isn't allowed to list prices for certain manufacturers, as part of a contract. They send him free clubs to review and test, and in return he doesn't give out things like price info. Might not be the case at all, but price only ever seems to pop up with clubs that are on the low end, where the manufacturer might have specifically wanted rick to point out the price.

cwugrad396 I'm currently playing Nike vapor pro combo. I'm off a 9 handicap but was as low as 4 around 15 yrs pre children. Nike have the nice feeling of a forged club but with some forgiveness. Shame they stopped making clubs when they had started making the best clubs they ever had. Winter is upon us here in the UK, so will be the driving range for me now

Personally I️ just bought a set of the Ben Hogan PTx irons but haven’t played a round yet. Also sick of TM and Callaway flooding the market so went with someone different. Weather is rubbish in Seattle

M1 isn't much to look at, so it isn't a winner for me. From the backside, the G400 isn't the best looking with that black "eye", but down by the ball (where it really matters) the G400 looks WAY better than the M1.

For me the Ping looks much better at address and the back of the club does to, I don’t know if it’s just me but, the sound of the Ping on video was much nicer to. Loving these head to head tests Rick, keep them going and keep up the good work.

So, you said the half degree for M1 gives it a 2 yard advantage, then said there were only 3 yards of separation, with the G400 being longer, so with that advantage, isn't that the 5 yards you say you need for a winner? It sounds like you got yourself backwards with that one.

I've been fully fitted for everything. I've gone to a golf club, spoken to a pro, and had them customise the club as I've been testing it. Once I'm happy with the results and I can see there is value from what I'm getting, I will buy it, but don't be afraid to try out different brands.

I'm going to use American Golf as an example - they're fitting is free, but it sucks. No shaft work other than 'regular' stiff' etc, and they almost never check the lie.

if you're referring to the irons the m1 irons have a slightly smaller head shape so they're basically the "pro" version. and as far as the woods go the m1 has adjustable weights in the bottom of the club for fine tuning and is also available in a 460cc head like the m2 and also a 430cc head size for 2016 and 440cc head size for 2017. Theres also a $100 us dollar or about 75 pound increase for the m1 whether it be for the irons or woods.
