Hi Mark. Great content as always. I have a set of Howson Fireblade irons from 1998. I play off about 28 but I don't play regularly. However, I am now stating to play more. I will book some lessons but was looking at the Wilson Staff C200 as a set of iron to replace the Howson. I hit a few shots at the shop and they felt nice. Do you think these will help? Has technology come on massiely in 20 years? I see people comparing old for new but it's normally good old clubs for good new clubs but my comparison would be 20 year old budget clubs Vs modern pretty good clubs. And as they are only £230 it's not gonna totally break the bank. Also I don't have an 8 iron which doesn't help. Fyi I'm not looking to get to single figures just become more consistent and maybe get near to breaking 90 on a regular basis.

The reality is when you change your irons you want to improve all round, striking distance etc. You may hit them similar as your old ones but physiology it has you in a better place, your excited to play a game and hit them.

And if you need a longer club, would you not rather have the shaft be totally, well the shaft (versus those inserts)? Another thing you'd have to pay for if you buy used...unless you are not a tall tower like I am...

Do you all lean towards new as you get things thrown in that you'd have to pay for in used? (e.g. grips, adjusted lie angles)?

I've been gaming my dad's G10s since I got back into golf about 2 years ago (I used to play a lot as a kid, stopped for a while, and just got back into it). Got lessons, and at the end of the lessons they did a fitting for me. I learned that my lie angle was 4 degrees upright with the G10s. The shots pulled left made a lot more sense now. So, I just invested in some RSi 1s. Very excited to start gaming these. Trust me, I didn't mind the G10s, I liked them a lot. It was just with this new information on the lie angle, I felt at a severe disadvantage so I felt no choice but to get new clubs. If you game your clubs just fine, you're pleased with them, then just keep them. Like Mark said, if you are feeling left down by them, or like me you get fitted to find out your clubs aren't to your specs and there's not much to do besides get new clubs, then get new ones. My opinion/story to share on getting new clubs.

How do you get sponsors to notice you on developmental tours and how much do most sponsors pay/help with gear? BTW I love your videos keep up the great work!

Lessons drills and practice its the discipline that will lower your score not the clubs.
Maybe reward yourself when you reach some goals :-)

I'm in a similar position as this guy, only my clubs are clearly not fit for me and I have the older Callaway X-16 irons. Lol

I agree that its all about the fitting. I struggled with irons until by happy accident I inherited a set of second hand clubs that happen to suit my game. Specifically, I struggled with the offset of the clubs I had been using. They were supposed to be game improvement forgiving irons but I couldn't consistently find the bottom of the swing arc with the clubs with more offset. The clubs I inherited were an older set of blades but have almost no offset whatsoever and we just clicked right away. Its not about "new", its about what you can work with.

1.07 I'd love to see you doing a test round with entry level Dunlops or similar.

+Andy M Great idea. Mark vs Matt using big box store entry level beginner clubs. Or a retro challenge using old clubs and wooden drivers/woods.

+Reza Opdebeeck seems to happen a lot. Under UK law you have 6 months to return faulty goods but not sure how it works if shipped abroad.

+Malcolm Powder not sure callaway would grind marks pm if a Dunlop performed almost as well.

+Andy M Agreed. A lot of people have asked for driver tests of some of the Sports Direct (or whoever) £15-25 Drivers etc.

I guess the tricky thing is that Mark would have to pay for them as I can't see the manufacturers providing them. Maybe people could send in some of the cheap stuff they have outgrown...

Mark if you are a high handicap player with a set of blades then change to a more forgiving set of cavity back irons I would suggest that your scores would improve dramatically. I quite agree though that perhaps spending a few quid on some lessons rather than the latest version of your current set would help your golf far more. Depending at what end of the spectrum your golf capability to the type of irons you use should be a more deciding factor in my view.

I bought new irons and like Mark said, you do play more golf because of your new shiny toys. But I didn't improve...why? Because I kept repeating my mistakes. However, in just a few lessons, I've improved quite a bit. If only I had spent the money on lessons instead of new irons, I would be heaps better now.
