Used 1976 Wilson Staff blades when I played college golf back in the mid 1980’s, they might have had some of the thinnest top lines of any irons I have seen. I thought they were easy to hit in College but when I tried them 20 years later I couldn’t believe how unforgiving they were. The new balls are just not made for the wooden clubs, I believe it was with a wooden driver though, so one did a test and found that the old balls actually went farther with the old balls, I think because the new balls didn’t spin enough and the balls just fell out of the air.

At a thrift store I found a 2 iron, MacGregor, same as the first set I had as a teen in the early 70s. It was in good form so I had a new grip put on it and popped it in the bag.

"Its not the arrows man, it's the Indian." Works so good off the tee when I don't want driver.

Don't sell, keep them. It's interesting how well the old clubs play, forgiveness is over-rated on the new equipment. The feel is Solid, not springy like a metal wood. Forged Irons are the best a have sets of Hogan's going back to the original '72 Apex's. Once you adjust from the jacked up lofts of modern irons they are great. The leather probably needs a refresh of a tacky substance such as protack.

Interesting to see the old clubs perform. Back in the days the better player who was able to secure the sweet spot more consistently was able to hold his own against the higher handicap player whilst giving away so many shots. Shame you didn't use a two piece ball from the same era, maybe better results. I used the real Balata balls and the control from 100 yds out was memorable, as too was the soft feel of the putting action. I'm 70 years old and still play off Plus 2, hard work, however, the modern equipment does help as the length off the Tee is maintained. The rest of the game they say is for the money.

your 3 wood reminds me of of set of 1984 ping eye2s gave my 2 grand kids, they like to hit rocks and balls with them out in the field next to our house when they come visit, heads on the woods are pretty chewed up from rocks

Tom Watson used to warm up for rounds by hitting his 2 iron first on the range. It was a mental approach for him. If he was hitting the ball well with the 2 he knew it would be a good day, and if he wasn't hitting it well he didn't sweat it too much because it was a 2 iron. It wouldn't be a terrible idea to get yourself an old 2 iron(I'm sure you've sold this one) and beat balls with it. It'll teach you a lot about your swing by feel, and you're less likely to get frustrated during the process. You're not far off in terms of having a truly repeatable swing that will give you good tournament success.

Played with a lot of older equipment over the years... my hickory shafts taught me the real jump in yardage is the new technology in the golf ball.

Played a set of hogan irons from the 70's until about three years ago. The only reason I switched was having to readjust lie angle 4 times a year. I was afraid I would break them bending much more.

I now play titleist mb's. The mb is a great club, but my hogans were more buttery smooth.

Blades WILL make a more consistent ball striker if you do your part!

before changing putter again, maybe have a SAM putt lab test to learn more about your stroke tendencies and wether the putter weight distribution might be the culprit... As much as I would blame myself before the equipment I firmly believe putters are a different beast altogether because of the feel and feedback nature of it.

Cheers,

I used to have the same problem with short putts, what I do now is line my clubface up with where I'm aiming so therefore that if you roll the putter correctly the ball will always go in the direction you've set up for. But it could be something to do with your takeaway etc.

Have you tried playing with your pressure over the balls of your feet instead of sitting back towards your arches? A thin grip promotes weight towards the toes and I think that could help your stability and strike

When they say a club is forgiving it means your distance drops on off center hits are reduced compared to no forgiving clubs, it does not mean it reduces your slice or hooks.

Stop blaming the clubs. The clubs are in good shape. Your swing is the problem.

You keep coming over the top with your swing. Shocking steep divots!

Hi Brendon
From what I see on the video you got the same problem as me, your tendency is to put the ball just a little bit to much back (1/4 to 1/2 inchs) the toe of the putters is open at impact, if you think that I am wrong look if your head is not to much back that can be the problem for your open face. have a nice day.

Not possible IMO. TBH of all the block putts theories. I think Malaska's lesson about standing inside the ball until the line looks straight has messed me up a bit. that and the heavier weight of the new putter. and I have to watch that forward head movement a bit.

Putter. Lay putter on flat surface standing on heel. Toe straight up in the air. get framing square and check if it is square. Now check grip to be sure it is 90 degrees square with face. My Scotty wasn't and I missed em left. Once I replaced the grip all the misses were my fault.

Hi great vlog, I do love the old clubs you really can dial in your ball strking with the feedback from the older club. Just looking at your last putt, not sure of your normal set up but your eyes look a little inside the ball which can cause a pushed putt. Keep up the good work.
Addison Coker

for your putting it looks to me like you are just a little late on the release causing it to just be a touch right. it is magnified on shorter putts because less time to correct itself.

Try to be cautious of your eyeline when you're putting it looks like the ball is getting well outside your eyeline which could lead to pushes. It could have something to do with your putting posture you talked about in another video.

21:00 Bingo! I have set of Wilson Dynapower (the early 60's) irons love to play. They play at least a club shorter than a modern blade but if you make a pendulum-like swing they feel great and are very accurate. Most players have problems with older blades because they want to pound them.

Hey Brendon, Great video! I don't have a handicap but to guess I'd say mid handicapper (18 ish) We've had a lot of hard rain here in Scotland and I decided for a laugh to take out a complete set of 1970's blades last week & persimmon 1 wood. Played 7 holes and found that I hit them straighter than my cavity backs! If I miss hit them I lose lots of distance if It's a topped strike but wasn't finding any pulls or major slices with them. Very interesting. also hit the persimmon wood straighter but not very far as my modern driver. Just a bit of fun. All the best, Kris

Hi Brendon if you remember your putter fitting because you were right eye dominant when you putted with your eyes closed the putt always went to the right? If i remember rightly? Maybe it needs to be fractionally forward in your stance? Practice with a 4 foot steel ruler the ball sits in the hole and try to putt it and stay on the ruler its a good exercise for straight putts? All the best Bob

maybe this will help your putting. im no way as good a professional as your "buddys" but im a junior golf trainer and i live golf;) your arms are perfekt in line with the putter shaft. you are adressing the putter a little bit on the heel. but you are very quick to lift the putter head after you hit the ball. this motion combined with a heel adress is maybe the reason the ball pushes or goes a little right. my tip would be to try and let the putter follow the ground(stay conected to the green surface) a little longer after you hit the ball before you lift up the head. for me it looks like your stroke looks a little to much like a chipping motion after you hit the ball (if that makes sense) you have been giving your muscle memory a lot of chipping input lately;). ps one thing i have learned and learn my juniors is that there is never just one correct answer in golf. Golf is the enigma we all try to break;) greets from Norway.(sorry for the long answer)

BE BETTER GOLF Honestly your stroke and feel looked great. The only mechanical issue I can see is your shoulders and head move forward after impact, causing a block when that move comes any earlier. It also explains why it's infrequent. Since you're using a slightly toe-balanced putter, I'd search for Tiger's putting routine on YouTube; it's a simple and quick warmup, it covers path and stability, and of course he's always good to copy.
